night aspens #1

night aspens #1 by robert j. johnson, 11 X 29 water color on arches 300 lb cold press paper, $650 matted, $750 framed

Aspens were saved to stay white with blue masking tape and then covered over with a dark wash of lamp black and ultramarine blue. Color was then dropped in wet “n” wet for bushes. Shadows were horizontally brushed on over the trees in the foreground as a contrast to all the vertical trees. Trees were then painted one at a time starting with the most distant and working forward so that the last largest piece of tape was the closest tree and the last to be removed and painted. ~ robert

***This painting can be purchased alone or with Aspens #2 and #3, which creates a dynamic triptych.***
